How BAR codes changed our world

Go to any grocery store and pick up an item, turn it over, and you will see a barcode. Barcodes are small symbolic patterns that relay information about the identity of a product. For the most part, these tiny archives go unnoticed, but they have become critical in the business world. Early use of the barcode involved labeling railroad cars, but the barcode's true commercial niche was in automating supermarket checkout systems.

Now, barcoding is implemented by the US Post Office, The Department of Defense, and just about every industrial application you can think of. In 1948 Bernard Silver began research into a system that could automatically read product information. Together with Joseph Woodland, the first workable system was developed using ultraviolet ink. The second system, developed by Woodland, was based on Morse Code.

He extended the dots and dashes of the code into narrow or wide vertical lines read by shining a 500-watt bulb through the paper onto an RCA935 photomultiplier tube. Later, a bulls-eye pattern was used so that scanning would work in either direction. By 1949, pioneers Woodland and Silver applied for US Patent 2,612,994 called Classifying Apparatus and Method.

At first, barcode scanning was unreliable and expensive as it required investments from large corporations willing to test the technology's potential. In 1952 RCA purchased the patent. In 1961 The Boston and Maine Railroads tested the system on gravel cars until 1967, when the Associated American Railroads AAR selected it as the standard used across the entire North American fleet. One year before that The National Association of Food Chains met to discuss the idea of using barcodes to automate checkout lines.

It was the Kroger chain who first volunteered to test the system based on the bulls-eye code. And by 1969, Computer Identics; a company formed by David Collins of the Pennsylvania Railroad, installed the first two systems at General Motors in Pontiac, Michigan and The General Trading Company in Carlstadt, New Jersey. These, among other initial financiers allowed barcode use to prove itself as viable, but the most common use for this technology is in the grocery and retail industry. It helps businesses to improve trade efficiency and as a result, the economy.

In the mid 1970s the NAFC developed an 11 digit code to identify any product, and the Universal Product Code UPC was born. Since then, industry has not been the same. By 1980, barcode systems were being implemented by 8000 new stores per year. Did barcode technology revolutionize business and industry?

As an experienced IT manager I have been using Windows logon scripts for many years to simplify managing my workstations and user sign ins. Creating logon scripts for your Windows domain is a fairly straight forward process that can really simplify your management issues. Logon scripts tend to be used primarily for mapping network drivers and printers but ultimately you can run just about any process from a logon script.

The primary command you will make use of when building a log in script is the "net" command. This command can perform many different tasks, to get an idea simply pull up a command line and type in "net /?" without the quotes and press the enter key. You will be greeted by a whole host of sub-commands that can be used with net. In fact there are twenty one different sub commands, but for now we will only focus on the more pertinent ones.

The main sub-command used with net will be use. Use allows you to connect to shares on servers and other workstations and map them as local drives. This will allow your users to store files on the network very easily without them needing to know which server or servers the actual files are stored on, making network management issues very easy. I should mention that the downside to mapping network drives does cause a lot of network chatter since the drives are continually connected. An alternative for low bandwidth situations such as remote offices connecting to centralized servers would be creating a shortcut which only connects when the user actually opens it up.

Another one of my favorite net sub commands is send. Send allows you to send a message to any or all systems on the entire network or Windows domain, it even allows you to pick which computer or domain. Now when you have an emergency or any kind of problem that needs the immediate attention of all your users on the network you can send them a simple little pop-up window with a message on there computer screen. Since the net send command pops up a window on the screen it draws the users immediate attention instead of sending them an email that they may not notice right away.

Once you have mastered these two commands then start exploring other options such as time, view or statistics. The time command used to be a valuable tool for synchronizing time across a domain back in the Windows NT days before network time protocol services where built in. Net view is a nifty command that will allow you to display shares on a computer, network or domain. You should also keep in mind that you can pipe the results into text files for advanced data file parsing or scripting tasks.

Finally if you need a deeper explanation of a specific net sub command simply type in net help. You will find that just this only little command used in conjunction with domain login scripts attached to your user accounts can really simplify many network management headaches.

How good is an Acer Aspire

Like other netbook makers, Dell Inspiron 6400 Battery is refreshing its line with the new Intel Atom N450 processor (Pine Trail), which promises similar performance but greater endurance. Also like its competitors, Acer has tweaked the design, adding a keyboard with the same style as its larger Inspiron 6400 Battery and trimming down the chassis. But most significantly, it's also trimmed the price: though our review model came in at $349, the Aspire One 532h starts at $299, a hundred bucks less than competing brands. But does price trump all, even in the commodified netbook market for Fujitsu Lifebook T5010 Battery ?

Design

The 532h is a bit of a departure from Acer's previous 10.1-inch netbooks, the Aspire One D150 and D250. In fact, it looks more like Acer's 11.6-inch netbook, the fujitsu t5010 battery. Instead of a solid color, the lid of the Onyx Blue 532h fades from a dark metallic blue to black. Other color options included Garnet Red and Silver Matrix. This treatment makes the netbook of hp compaq 6510b battery look much more refined. However, the glossy finish, hp 6510b battery is also found beneath the keyboard, picks up fingerprints quickly. There's now a lot less room at the top of the deck; the keyboard is shoved right up to the top, and the power button is crammed in by the left hinge.

Like the hp 6510b battery, hp compaq 6510b battery saw fit to change the design of the six-cell battery on the 532h. No longer does it jut out the back; it's now tucked in underneath, shaving three quarters of an inch off the footprint. The area beneath the display and between the hinges has a sharp edge as opposed to the smoother curves of the vgp-bps8. At 10.2 x 7.3 x 1.0 inches and 2.8 pounds, the 532h is about the same size, shape, and weight as most 10-inch netbooks.

Heat

After playing a Hulu video at full screen for 15 minutes, the touchpad on the 532h registered 92 degrees Fahrenheit, sony vgp-bps8 between the G and H keys was 91 degrees, and the middle of the underside reached 97 degrees. While we don't consider any this heat to be troublesome, the temperature of 110 degrees in the left front corner was a cause for concern.

Keyboard and Touchpad

Instead of a traditional keyboard as sony vgp-bps9 on its older netbooks, the 532h has Acer's FineTip keyboard, sony vgp-bps9/b is completely flat on top, and has a slight space between each key. Also, it's larger than when compared to older netbooks: whereas on the D250 there was approximately half an inch of space on either side of the keyboard, on the 532h there's less than a quarter of an inch unused. While it looks identical to the layout on the 11.6-inch 751h, the 532's keyboard is smaller and the keys have a shallow pitch to them, which made typing somewhat more difficult. We much prefer the keyboards on the vgp-bps9/b and the Toshiba mini NB305, which have island-style layouts and more space between the keys.
We're also pleased to see that vgp-bps9/s on the 532h is much larger than on previous Acer netbooks. At 2.6 x 1.4 inches, it's positively spacious compared to the previous generation- sony vgp-bps9/s still not as large as that on the Toshiba mini NB305. The multitouch-enabled touchpad is covered with a number of tiny dots that distinguish it from the glossy deck, making it practically friction-free. While we wish the metallic blue mouse button beneath was split into two, it's sufficiently large and has a nice response
